Week 14 - The Digital Dark Ages

The Digital Dark Ages presents evolving data that may pose a threat to our digital artifacts. Excessive data generated in advanced societies is the root of most of our issues. Three critical elements are proposed to address this: Digital Vellum, ensuring continuity in data formats; Data Archaeology, a field focused on digital preservation; and Non-toxic Social Media, advocating for platforms prioritizing user well-being.

Digital Vellum, dubbed by Internet pioneer Vint Cerf, questions the accessibility of current technologies in the future. The need for Data Archaeology emphasizes the preservation of digital artifacts by individuals on their own terms and corporations. Non-toxic Social Media urges alternatives that prioritize user mental health over profit-centric algorithms.

We can conclude that a call for personal clouds will empower users to take control of their data and social interactions. In a data-rich era, proactive measures are crucial to prevent the potential loss of invaluable digital heritage.
